Impact on Farmers of Participating in the Teagasc Beef Discussion Groups 2012-2014

Project summary

Farmer discussion groups are a proven method of knowledge transfer in agriculture. The Food Harvest 2020 Report identified that discussion groups play a key role in improved performance at farm level and the Beef 2020 Activation Group recommended the provision of funding for discussion groups in the sector. The Beef Technology Adoption Programme (BTAP) was introduced for a three year period (2012-2014) which resulted in a significant increase in the number of beef farmers participating in discussion groups. Teagasc commissioned this independent evaluation to assess the impact on farmers of participating in beef discussion groups. The research involved a survey of 350 beef farmers, 3 focus group meetings and assessments using Teagasc National Farm Survey data.
